O Falltraeth Pen Cob i Ynys Llanddwyn

Our first time out on the mountain bikes since cycling round Île d'Oleron last June. We parked in Malltraeth and cycled over to Pen Cob, and then continued through the forest on the fire roads.
It felt like the first day of Spring. 17C with a cool SW breeze. Lots of saddle position tweaking needed as it was quite uncomfortable. Firebreak roads through the forest led to the beach. A good hour's stop at the beach for our lunch of cheese and salami pittas and Greek salad.  Someone went into the sea and submerged themselves fully!
We followed part of a signed mtb route back to the car.
A really good day out.

Compression testing

Bike problems

Just before Christmas 2025, I rode my 23-year old Honda Innova ANF 125 to our local plant nurseries and parked it up. I could smell petrol as I walked off and thought it might be from another vehicle. When I came back to the bike some time later, I noticed a small pool of petrol on the ground. So, it was my bike. And it looked like there was oil leaking from the engine too. Urrrk!

I rode home and parked on my driveway while I opened the garage door. A few more drops of petrol had leaked out and the smell was very strong. Even Chubs could smell it in the house as the lounge windows were open for ventilation. Clearly, I'd got a problem.

Last summer, I'd found that the original automatic petrol stopcock (autopetcock) was faulty. Repair was a going to be difficult and success was not guaranteed, and a new original Honda part was going to be around 80 quid. So, I replaced the autopetcock with a manually operated one - while doing that I replaced all the petrol lines linking the tank with the carb, and replaced the small inline filter. Six months later, something had gone wrong with my new system. Cold, dark December days aren't conducive to garage work so, just before Christmas 2025, I turned off the bikes petcock manually, closed the garage door and left the problem until another day.

Solution

With a move down to 3 days a week at work from the New Year, I had some more time on my hands and so set about tracing the petrol leak and seeing what else needed doing.  To have a really good look and get access to the mechanicals, I took off the plastic body panels. After 23 years, the panel fixture points were not in great shape and very few of the original fasteners were still there.

It was really obvious what had happened to cause the leak. The cheap petrol pipe was clearly the problem - it had pulled off the brass inlet pipe on the carburettor. Removing this pipe all the way back to the tank revealed that it had become brittle and hard - and possibly shorter - as it had probably reacted with the petrol. Possibly it was caused by the E10 petrol, although I think it was more likely to be down to very cheaply made inferior quality material.

A quick trip down to my local bike shop meant I was able to buy a metre of decent quality pipe and a new inline filter for a tenner. All fitted and secured, I opened the petcock and fuel flowed into the carb with no leaks The bike started first time on full choke. Result! Notes to self: "Buy Cheap, Buy Twice" and Don't be such a skinflint!

An opportunity

I'd bought a compression tester a couple of years ago and had meant to use it on my project bike. I'd also planned to use it on the Innova as I suspected poor performance might be down to worn or leaky valves or even piston blowpast.  With the bike up on the ramp with the spark plug accessuble, now seemed a good time to do it. And why not?

So, I decided to give it a go, First the valve clearances need checking and adjusting if necessary (mine were a bit tight), Then the engine had to be warmed up to operating temperature; just a 5 minute idle while up on the ramp did the trick. Then, working quickly, I was able to remove the spark plug and scxrew in the compression tester. I put the plug back into the plug cap and made sure it earthed against the cylinder fins.

To perform a test is very simple: ignition on, wind the throttle to the fully-open position and then hit the starter. As the engine turns over, the pressure inside the testing apparatus builds up and the needle on the gauge edges upwards. There comes a point where the needle won't climb any higher and so you can stop cranking the engine. The compession value is read of the gauge.

The dial read around 11.7 Bar. The Haynes workshop manual provided a guide figure of 12 Bar. I was really pleased that my 23 year old, 30,000 mile engine returned such a decent compression.

Start of our Corfu trip

 Home - Κέρκιρα

As we had a late flight at evening meal time, we went with the idea of 'front loading' whereby we ate a lot of more food than usual in the earlier part of the day. So, breakfast for me was spring onion and pepper omlette with coffee; Chubs had nothing. We took Nain out for lunch

Cwm Penamnen, Dolwyddelan a Betws y Coed

Train there and back

Back on the bikes up at Cwm Penamnen above Dolwyddelan. Train from Llandudno Junction up to Pont Rhufeinig then blast down the A470 for a couple of klicks to Dolwyddelan village. Stock up on coffee and cake in the Spar shop before attempting the big climb up into the cwm.

After a tour of the cwm, descend back to Dolwyddelan and then choose from a number of routes back to Betws for more coffee and the train home.

Kirroughtree Stane

A big day out! Great weather for March - 18C and hazy sun. Fairly quiet - only a few people around.
We did the Red and the Black.
Some great locations

Some great biking

Glentrool - one of the 7 Stanes

We're in Scotland again

We're in the Galloway Forest the one on the top left.

We did Glentrool blue run yesterday. It was a reasonable blue route - not too difficult and some faster sections with big banked corners
We're off to Kirroughtree today.

Penmachno - on the first day of Spring

Our first time out for a while. Penmachno trails were quite tough - rain had washed away a good deal of the soil making the bigger rocks stand out.
No 2 fell off and damaged her wrist. Decided to call it a day after a few singletrack sections

Tandem

OMG. I bought a tandem this week. I've been out on it with my 11 year old Huw and he loves it. Elin is 14 and a little bit more self-conscious and hasn't actually been on it yet. Ginny reckons it'll be Tuesday by the time she gets on it.

Hadrian's Wall Cycle Way (HCW)

Just when I thought the boys had planned to do the c2c (the hilly route), we ended up on the Hadrian's Cycle Way (route 72). What a great 3 days out with Doug, Tony, Tim and Ray.

174 miles over 3 days - very do-able and great fun...

Resting before the c2c

Finished the training rides - only two last week of 20 and 25km. Legs just fine!
Setting off on Tuesday to leave the van at the finish point of Tynemouth and then start heading back towards the start point at Ravensglass.

Big Weekend

I haven't blogged for  while, but I had to let the world know about this. Being invited to spend a weekend in a cliff-top cottage in Aberdaron is one thing - cycling there and back is another. I'm doing the c2c Hadrian's Wall route in a few weeks, so this was a good opportunity to get some kilometres in.

Here's my route there and back. Out on Friday and back yesterday, Monday. About 200 Km round trip.

The ride there was surprisingly level, except for the sharp hill up from Trefor to Llithfaen over to Nefyn. I took it very easy and arrived at 7pm after having left at midday.

The ride home was quite tough, as the weather had warmed up and I'd opted to do the Crimea Pass from Maentwrog through Blaenau Ffestiniog over to Dolwyddelan down to Betws. It tops out at 385 metres aod. Must have gone through 6 litres of water...

12 April 2010

Big day out

Trying to get sorted for the c2c in June. Thought I'd go for a longer ride to see how if felt - and take some kit and water to add to the weight. Just to see how it felt.
I did choose a hilly route, though! Ginny, Elin and Huw were taking the dogs for a walk over in Rhuallt, so I got a lift there and rode home.

Route: Rhuallt, Tremeirchion, Bodfari, Llangwyfan, Ddinbych, Henllan, Llansannan, Llangernyw, Black Cat, Home = 58 Km

Daft Day Out

I can recommend a downhill MTB run from Dolwyddelan to Betws Y Coed. Let the train take the strain uphill and then mountain bike downhill.

Scenic little trip - and quite okay for families. There is a very short section crossing the A470 where you have to take care, although you don't need to ride along that road, as there is a dedicated shared use path alongside it.

If you get the train times right, you could catch the next one up and do it again. Less than 5 quid for dad and son.

Icy mud - urrggghhh!

Horrible conditions in Clocaenog Forest today. Huw and I started out in Cyffylliog near Rhuthun and climbed a total of 350m altitude and 17km distance. Semi frozen mud in the forest, along with thawing puddles of mud and ice in the deeply rutted tracks made very slow going. Normally a 2 hour ride, we did it in 4 hours and ended up very cold, wet and filthy. Huge ice patches on the minor forest roads and -3C at the top.

We both forgot the food so we had to blast down to Tesco in Rhuthun for something to eat. Don't even bother with sandwiches when you can buy hot southern fried chicken for a couple of quid! Hot food, that's what we needed.
We're wrecked!

20 January 2010

The ice has gone

Since the ice has gone, we got out on Sunday. Destination Marín Trail.

What surprised me was the sign in the carpark in Gwydyr Forest - the one with the map of the bike trails. Actually the sign wasn't surprising, it was the scorch marks where person(s) unknown have burned off the English names of various parts of the Marín Trail; the Welsh place names are untouched. Actually, I'm not surprised at that either - I'm surprised that the course designers (or whomever) decided to call various places by English names. I mean - with the landscape the way it is and the relics of industry scattered around - why did they have to resort to names for sections such as "Sleepy Bear" and "Pigs might Fly"? I don't understand

Swimming not walking !

Snow forecast so swimming is the exercise of the day.
  • 500 pull on about 60s / 50m
  • 500 leg-kick - slow
  • 300 free on about 60s / 50m
About 40 mins.

Found a great Blog - The Massive MTBer - seems there's a few larger riders out there.

04 January 2010

walking not biking

Had to go for another walk today - with the dogs. Quite cold in the wind  on the Morfa and it was high tide so no sand for the dogs to run on. So, we had to make do with a walk on the path towards the Beacons opposite Deganwy.
Glad to get back

Fart oo icy to bike

Way too icy to get the bike out, so I've gone for a walk up Conwy mountain starting at the top of Sychnant.

Quite slippery underfoot, but great to be out in the bright sunlight. The sun has some strength in it as we all got warm coming down the south side towards the top of Sychnant.

Hour and a quarter's walking - probably about 5Km
Caer Seiont is a great place.
